Who is Avery
Avery (she/her) is a photographer whose work explores the intersections of isolation, transformation, and identity through photography and mixed-media processes. She is especially drawn to abandoned and overlooked spaces—forgotten buildings, empty lots, and weathered structures—where traces of human presence linger. Through her lens, she seeks to reveal the quiet beauty within decay, documenting how time, neglect, and environment reshape these places into something unexpectedly poetic. Urban and constructed environments—benches, asphalt, garages—serve as stages for human presence and absence, and within these spaces she incorporates figures and symbolic imagery to create moments that are both vulnerable and surreal, blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination.
Strong contrasts of light and shadow, reflection and distortion, destruction and release recur throughout her practice. Whether it is a lone figure curled on a bench, a reflection suspended in cracked asphalt, masks engulfed in flames, or the fragile stillness of an abandoned interior, each piece confronts viewers with the fragility and resilience of the human condition.
By balancing documentation with symbolism, Avery’s work invites reflection on how people perceive themselves and the worlds they inhabit. Ultimately, she aims to create images that not only capture fleeting states of solitude and resistance but also uncover beauty in unexpected places, opening space for healing, closure, and transformation.
